Am not going to explain how and why i gave this terminology, rather am going to speak more about brain struck.
I was watching a conversation between two people in a meeting. One person was explaining something beautiful, his flow was great. He was interrupted by a phone call and then he missed his flow. At that point he was Brain Struck. I felt bad for him. There was a similar situation when i was explaining to someone. Someone gave me a name which i loved to hear and i was lost and brain struck. What happens here within us is very interesting. The storage information coincides with present happenings and the brain finds it hard to get aligned. If this is one such case. There is an other thing too.
There are few things which we wanted to do for a longtime but we never do that. Like writing a blog atleast in my case. Even if we sit on a particular task, we will not be able to perform it. You think Ah! i know this.. it happens many times. Well! that true, what happens here is interesting. Any task which has to be performed needs to have acceptance from your brain/mind. When this doesn't happen. You sit on a plain word file typing and deleting words for hours and your Brain Struck.
How to handle Brain Struck? In my little experience with these familiar situations i used various ways and zeroed on few things which worked for me.
In the first case of Brain Struck where you find a while to get back on track, i tried restricting my brain to operate and find the historical information temporarily and had that instance saved in my present so that i can recall it once my given task is completed. Its not complicated or hard to do that. In simple words you ignore that instant completely and after your meeting/conversation/task is completed you recall what you ignored. This has worked effective for me.
In the second case where we don't do anything, but just keep thinking that it has to be completed. I closed my eyes had 10 deep breaths and compelled myself to start something in that lines for 20 minutes and then the brain actually gave the acceptance and i was able to accomplish the task.
I thought the brain struck is something by which we feel dis-satisfied with ourselves. So, thought of sharing it. Next time when you open any empty file and keep it for hours... realise you are brain struck and remember to try out the option.

lil things

Oh its twenty ten. I visited my blog and i have not yet started scribbling for this year, o.m.g am i getting so busy? no way
I know this thing, the moment you start saying your busy you will never find time for anything. A very happy new year to me and all.
How to feel happy? this is something i used to keep wondering.
There was once when i was too depressed and crazily stressed out. I sent a text "i will be at your home at 9" to my friend with whom i had a fight. we haven't been in touch for real longtime. I was there at my friends home meeting him after 2 years. That was a happy moment. There are many more little small things which brings so much of happiness for us and others. Being happy is sometimes a state of mind. I remember studying a article on being happy. Let me recall and put things which i remember.
Here we go, first is to forgot your past, if you carry the burden of your past memories you can never be happy. I am taking about real bad memories which keeps haunting us. second is, someone said the secret of happiness is freedom and the secret of freedom is courage. When you give a deep thought you will realize what this statement means. The point is taking responsibility for your life. Read it and think about it, you will understand. Third is to build relationships. Sometimes love becomes a need for us to stay happy and for this we need to have relationships. We love our parents, brothers, friends and so on and these people make us happy and we also share love with them. Have many passions in life. Like photography, singing, writing, dancing, business and anything you like. This will make you feel happy, the reason why many? if you do just one thing you get tired and you should never let your passion tire you. The next one is to have a positive mind set and work creatively. If you are confused or too concerned on where to start. Start with what you have and make the best or full use of your talent. Don't let your self on a struggle that to do this i need that and so on. And the last one is to make others happy, this is also something which i do.
Wanted to start my first blog of twenty ten in a happy note. Now, it makes sense to wish you a very happy new year.

Waves

I have been receiving waves of feedback for my past few blogs. The feedback said, my blogs are boring these days and doesn't really make things interesting. Well! i felt the same too... after reading it couple of times :) Thanks all for the feedback provided to me over the phone, e-mails and all other ways. Actually it is only handful of them. I just wanted to blog this..
Why waves? What waves? i guess that's the best distant communication till date... Communication industry over the past decade has changed our lifestyles to a great extent. The list of things which we have personalized for us is way too much... we all have a number these days, e-mail ids, fb and orkut accounts, a twitter id, a chat id. So, many ways to say a hi :). I was watching the TV commercial for airtel or vodafone or aircel or something (almost every ad looks d same), they were all communicating about saying one word... Well! and there was an other commercial which said live every moment and wherever you go we follow stuffs. How true, i live every moment and the network follows me everywhere i go too (no matter whatever service i use)... Like, i was in my deep sleep and was in a dreamland... and i received a call (i have some funny ring-tones too)... the person said "sorry to disturb you at this time, but its important". Well! i did live every moment and wherever i go it did follow too... even in my dreams. At that living moment i thought life sucks and i strongly disliked following stuff too. sometimes its good if nothing follows you and u live your every moment.
I mean things have changed these days... Lets assume you have been invited for lunch at someones home. Years back the people who had invited u will prepare a tasty food and wait until u come for lunch. These days, you receive a call in the morning conforming the time (if they don't call... u give a call to them) and then a call when you start from your home... and then provide a update about traffic to them and finally you give a call when your 10 minutes away from their home. why these many calls... people these days don't have patience or may be tolerance. They e-mail you and expect a reply within hours. The waves of communication have changed our world. Welcome to our new world. Kids these days have access to everything with the Internet. People speak and exchange texts even at late night hours.
I was thinking deep inside on how we should be managing our children in this new age of unlimited exposure. I thought these could be the probable things we have to do.
1. Teach them tolerance.
2. Don't allow them to have a personal e-mail id. Create a common e-mail id for your kids which can be accessed by you and your wife.
3. Don't encourage kids to own them a cell phone. Let them use either of your number or the home telephone number.
4. Create browsing restrictions for your kids in your home computer.
Do all these at least until your kid is 16 or 18. These can be the vital factors in future.
We all know the good things about these developments. But, there is also a flip side which i think we need to see.

Neither is Ram worried nor Allah is... It was worrying deep inside of me that the country will once again fall apart. Well! am not going to talk about BJP or Shiv Sena or any other uncivilized or civilized political party. Am not so knowledgeable to scribble about that. All i want to say is I had a friend during those days who practiced Islam as it was the religion from his ancestor days and on Dec 6th during one of the very old years some incident took place somewhere by which he was affected. And it took day for us to bring him back to normality. I stay in a place where when i walk on the road i will find Abraham, Ibrahim and Brahmans walking along the streets seeing no difference in their religions. I only wish... few people who love the British way don't let us again to the dark days which they did years back.
If one thinks what is the real purpose of religion... and the reason we pray God... These ill-beneficial activities will not happen. I guess people are lazy to think deep and straight. Many times it makes me wonder... no matter how many sensible people live in this world... still things happen...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fullspot.blogspot.com/2009/11/neither-is-ram-worried-nor-allah-is-but.html' title='Neither is Ram worried nor Allah is... I almost forgot that I used to blog. Well! today i just thought i need to scribble something... don't ask me why... even if you ask... i wouldn't know it...
Thought process doesn't really kick... nothing is coming out and don't know on what topic to write... May be i can try triple benefits... well that is something i think my clients should be getting it... may be i can try Indian politics... this is something which i wouldn't know much... but may be i can give a shot...
I was in discussion with some person sometime back... he was talking about nanden nillkani... the infosys guy... it seems he wrote a mail to his colleague about his first day experience in the great Indian Parliament... and the mail was leaked and forwarded to many... Well! for me to believe to that story... i have to be Stupid... Well as you all know am not anymore... I would say he is a good politician on day one... you should be knowing it why...
Indian politics is well crafted and the people to whom we cast our vote really make a difference.... i have always believed in that.
Our political system is simple to view and complex to be a part of it. India is a middle class dominated country, and this class see no much change in their way of life no matter who rules. And sadly, these votes set the background of the rulers. This is what perhaps creating the best political system to perform below expectations. In so many years, i have seen the drive for me from chennai to bangalore is good. The drive on the ecr is cool. Easing the traffic through the over-bridge is awesome. Growth in rural education is welcoming. and lot more to add. The big truth of our political system is that, how much ever corrupt a person in the political system is... if he fails to perform he vanishes.
I guess, the day we start appreciating our politicians things will change in a faster pace.

s...e...a...r...c...h............

This is one word every human has it common. Searching for the right leader, searching for terrorists, searching for peace, searching for hints, searching for love, searching... searching... and searching... the search never ends in our life.
Recently Google completed some x number of years since they first launched... The worlds popular search engine. It is so interesting that whatever you want to know... type it and you find results. Even if you want to know Where is God or Where is Prabhakaran or Where is truth. If you were in search of these then you would realize your search would yield millions of results. As i belong to this wonderful industry of the world wide web and information technology, i was feeling good that utilizing the world in which i operate knows everything.
This is what we are today, part of the virtual world. Where you will find answers but not the correct answer. Its a different world where we are making our livelihoods. We have adopted a life style where we are not truthful in ourselves and many times we hide ourselves from us.
Humans ability to keep focused and use their gifted brains to search and find answers is a awesome process. The way in which we search for things today has taken a different form. It is time bounded... It settles on approximate and assumption rather than accurate and conclusion. Few days back i closed my eyes and was doing my own self analysis, where i asked my self simple questions... how truthful am i, have i done at least 10 good things for the society for the past 10 years... may be even 1... when was the last time i searched something desperately which my heart wanted to do... and few more questions... the results were not satisfactory...
May be we need to optimize our search to yield perfect and appropriate results.
Am incomplete.... Am in search of many things...

Real Indian Celebrations at Oscar

What a day it is at Oscar (The most respected awards for movies globally). WOW! Probably no awards until now might have been celebrated in the slums of Mumbai and at the villages of UP as what it has celebrated for Oscars.
Oscar awards, ARR, Danny, Slumdog millionaire and Smily Pinki has given hopes and happiness to so many Indians who fight for their livelihood. This day will change their life, they have gained hopes and they will be even more optimistic about life.
Many thanks for SM and SP team to showcase the other part of India which many Indians close their nose and eyes. Now, its the same areas which have got those awards.
ARR, has always been my inspiration and am extremely happy for him to win the double awards back to back and make our country proud.
It was great to watch who were walking in the red carpet along with legends like ARR, Danny, Kate, Brad and much more globally celebrated people. It was the kids from the slums of Mumbai and Pinki. What a day of hope and optimism for all those Indians who have been neglected longtime.
Jai ho is probably not the best of ARR but undoubtedly its probably one of the ever best inspiring songs ever created in the world by any musician.

Blink

on a beautiful day when i was walking in the streets which was buzzing with the various sounds of vehicle engines, horns and people's voice. In that instant my thought was wide open and started thinking what could be happening around in a moment in blink of my eyes. what will my parents, brothers, sister-in-laws, children and friends will be doing in just a moment i had blinked my eyes. somewhere someone might have accepted the persons love. someone somewhere might be enjoying a roller-coaster ride. someone somewhere might have just joined a terrorist group. someone might have just got shot by someone. someone might have hit the ball to boundary. someone might have just got anxious because of someone. And many more things to list and all in just a blink of eyes.
It made me to think even deeper by increasing my eye click time and what more might have happened. things might have got worse, got good, or may be got settled for someone somewhere. How wonderful world where every human and other species have their own life living every microsecond. Life is what we call it. Life on earth. we are even finding possibility of such kindoff life in other terrestrial regions away from earth.
It is also so wonderful how is that one human is connected to another in a emotional way and making their world and life a big one. Words like commitment, care, help and love attached between one human and other for which we give names as various relationships.
When the world is so open and life is so interesting, where in every blink there is suspense in our life which gets unfolded.
Having my mind chewed enough on what happens in a blink. realised life is a constant changing and evolving process for each one of us and no second is same as the this second, as we all know. and every human your connected to keeps thinking and their thought process also evolves with time.
So, if there is communication block between any two humans. I would suggest to speak it out and sort it out as said my Mahatma Gandhi, this reduces the various unwanted assumptions which occupy the precious time of your blink and will ensure your mind is free and thinks productive.
We all at least have a little control here and there in our own world to make things better. Ensure, from the next time you blink everyone is happy about you and happy for you and utmost your also happy about you and with others.

The RiDe

I was out of city to reach a town which is around 350 kilometers away. The person whom I was meeting took his last breath on Saturday at 6:20 AM and was never going to try to breathing once again. I was meeting him to send him safe and also burn him to ashes.
I reached the town around 11:30 pm on the same day night. Had to rest my body to flat position at least for some 4 to 5 hours time by keeping my eyes closed. Yes! I was tired and had to sleep for 5 hours.
The sun kept rising and the stroke of the ocher fell on my eye lids demanding for the black and white rolling stuff to view the beauty. It must be around 6 in the morning as I walked out to the street and watched the house where I should be leaving in the next hour. The house had a new temporary roof made in the front with tent materials.
I sipped the sunrise coffee, it’s an addiction for me. I will not be able to do anything if I don’t sip the coffee in the morning. I rolled the beddings and dressed my self in a unfashionable style. I stepped out of the house where I was staying to reach that house. The door was wide open and people were dropping in and dropping out. They also came for the same purpose I had come.
The time was heading noon, everyone had paid their respect to him as he was resting in freezer box which had a intake of some 220 volts and covered with a glass top. The time was moving steadfast and it was time to get his body out to bring it to ashes.
I stepped out of the house to look at the mortuary travel facility. I noticed a mortuary auto. Haven’t seen anything creative and usable like that before. The vehicle was decorated with flowers and also had a bird tied and hanging. His body was perfectly fitted in the provided rails and was taken across the small lanes showered by flowers to reach the final destination.
The auto gave some acceleration as it was going too slow and finally engine was stopped at the electrical funeral. This was the first time I was witnessing electrical funeral. It was a touch of creativity and technology. People were gathered there too and once the body was taken out of the auto and kept at the electrical burial, a perfect situational background music was played to add more glamour to the occasion. The final formalities were completed and his body drove inside the electrical furnace. The end result a small pot of ash and probably few bones too. The remains provided was also not left, it was finally washed at shores of river of kaveri.
Being a bachelor all his life, there were no 3rd and 10th day rituals, a sad thing I thought being a bachelor. He was leading his life in a very good manner by helping others and showering lots of love and affection for the people whom he thought they deserved it. He was my uncle.
Thought can share my experience of taking the last ride with someone.

9002 - few more days to turn

i was born years back. from there on until now after every 365 or 366 days a year wakes up and an other year to history.
2008 is a year where many of my friends got married ending there bachelor life at the coffin. a year when India made its best appearance at Olympics. a year where the US president just missed the hit from 10 size shoes twice. a year where Lehman brothers crashed. a year where we hear of global economic crisis. a year when media created history making a mad rush live relay on mumbai terror attacks. a year where life seem to be different. a year where i found few new people in my life. a year where i faced different situations. a year where i realized different emotions similar to the year before and the year before.
People say the worst is yet to be seen in 2009. 24f provided me a invite to meet in person. well! it took almost 3 months for me to go and meet her as i was in no mood in meeting strangers. but, for the sake of it... i went to meet 24f. its only then i realized she was a distant known to me... actually not 24f but 29f and due to circumstances she moved into a profession which is the worlds first profession. and she uses messengers and gtalks and socail networking stuffs to get clients. i was very depressed... i was puzzled for a moment and then gave some words to her and few minutes of genuine friendship before i left her. and then she had removed me from all contacts and also i did not try reaching her.
Well! so all you people out there. don't encourage any online strangers. u mite end up in a deep nowhere. try to get to know some real people around instead.

Stinks

I will be fucked up when someone piss me off. Next time when you speak ensure it doesn't stink :) unless it is necessary.

Left in the lurch

I preferred to be right in the lurch, but i am left in the lurch unfortunately. Its been few days of group discussion happening between me and many me's inside me. No! result drawn yet.
Well! what is this situation all about?
Its about everything and nothing.
To draw a broader perspective. global war activities, global economic crisis and situations boiling down to affect every citizen of the world from emotions, feelings and relationships. Not many is going good. At these times is where we struggle to find solutions in the limited and bright brains we have. and end up praying God hard to harder.
At these times there is a 5 point command which I believe
1. Stay Positive
2. Face the situation
3. Don't allow situation to dominate you
4. Try to be as happy as possible
5. Have faith and confidence

Its at these times where our real faith and confidence is taken for test. If we are confident and have faith in ourselves we survive and walk out of the lurch finishing it, else we get surrendered in the situation and from there onwards life takes a different turn. This time we end up living our life dominated by situations. This is known as caught in the lurch.
Its been sometime that i keep listening many things from many people and mostly its not a so good news. Sparingly i hear some good news. The end result of my hearing and also few realizations made me to write this blog.

I saw something today

It was during the late evening time, my head was spinning and i had to leave for home. We call our sixth sense as Intuition.

The sixth sense is a power which goes beyond practicality of life. Like Love at First Sight, Confidence and many more.

Sometimes we humans just neglect what our intuition says and surrender to the word PRACTICAL. The great people of the world were the strong followers of their sixth sense, like Mahatma Gandhi, Galileo, Einstein, Edison, Ramanujan, Aryabhata and many more.

There are small ways in which we can realise our intuition power. Like sometimes you feel someone is watching you and when u turn around you find a person. Or sometimes before someone utters a word you know what he/she is going to speak. Or You think of a person and the phone rings.

There were lot of incidents in my life where the sixth sense played a vital role. One such incident was during a time when i was suffering from group of diseases and was admitted in the hospital. It must be around mid time when no when was around and i was not able to breathe and i was not able to shout or even speak to call someone. Slowly my breathing was getting worst. it was very suffocating and i was loosing my consciousness slowly... at this hour my intuition said someone will be there in few moments and hold yourself... when i turned, i saw my dad and then i was saved.

Literally intuition means “inner sight”. Other meanings are 'inner consciousness' or 'inner knowledge'. Originally the word is Latin. According to the dictionary intuition is 'immediate mental apprehension without reasoning; immediate insight.' It is something that we all take for granted, yet is it not remarkable that somehow we can come to correct conclusions without having all the fact to hand and without using reason? How is it that we can form an immediate assessment of a person the first time we meet them and find that our initial insight is proved to be correct. And why is it that we can sometimes make a correct guess at a direction to travel or guess the answer to a question and get it exactly right. This is what we call the presence of sixth sense.
There are times when i run out of solution and my mind will have thousands of questions to answer, I call it as confusion. At these times i approach God to show me some sign and my inner consciousness rises with clarity and it will ensure my mind settles in peace and i am able to enjoy the happiness of the present moment. This inner consciousness is what i call it as intuition and it is often accompanied with confidence. In many mysteries surrounding us, i never understood this Intuition to a great extent but i just follow it. So far it has been so good.
So, at times i ask you not to surrender to the word Practical and just follow what your intuition says. May be Intuition is the way in which God is in constant touch with us and communicates to us.

Is Value of Life ChNAged with time?

At the night hours of a day, i was watching a classic Tamil movie in sun tv just the day after I watched a recent Indian movie in the theatres. The way in which value of life dealt was entirely different in movies those days and movies these days. Considering the fact that the movies are reflection of life. Loyalty was meant to be a normal thing those days and betrayal was a occasional incident. And today we people search for loyalty and trust has been the costliest thing in the world and act of betrayal and lies are normal. Even relationships were given a great value those days and these days we talk of right of homosexuality and justify pre marital and post marital affairs.

Thinking on these lines reminded me Darwins theory of evolution. His theory was derived from the basis of five observations.

1) Species have great fertility. They make more offspring than can grow to adulthood.
2) Populations remain roughly the same size, with modest fluctuations.
3) Food resources are limited, but are relatively constant most of the time.
From these three observations it may be inferred that in such an environment there will be a struggle for survival among individuals.
4) In sexually reproducing species, generally no two individuals are identical. Variation is rampant.
5) Much of this variation is heritable.

This states that the foundation is widely the same but, his theory also states that there is constant improvement in the species. Is the human species of these days are more prone to face disappointments and keep moving ahead.

I happen to meet people and it was very interesting learning their perception of life. which was widely "if you feel like doing it, do it" which was revolving around a selfish circle and respecting only their selfish motives. Is that... our own human species have changed and evolved to a new version of species? Is that we need to accept that this is a change and move forward or hold and keep reminding ourselves and others the value of life?

In today's world according to my view human life is dominated by greed and lust and the value of real life will soon be a dream of mankind. and may be movie makers instead of shooting a sci-fi movie will be shooting a movie based on value of life, which we generally term it as circle of life.

Whatever may it be. I strongly believe we have options to lead the life the way we want to lead. Lets choose the option which has got a long-term benefit rather than fulfilling our short term desires.

W O R D S (S W O R D)

Does words mislead? or Words gives you clarity?... Well! repeatedly asking these questions and finding answers, and also went to an extent of stealing this word "language deaf" from a blog.

What did Osho say... what did some guy say... What did your friend say... Its all words...

I was involved in a debating conversation with one of my friend who was insisting that words need to be spoken and taking my ears out and demanding me to accept Yes.. words are essential... by the end we ended up changing topic with some other words... like movies... music...

After a tiring conversation i saw my daughter who is only few months old... was enjoying the small sound she cutely makes and the smile she spreads... Happiness, satisfaction and peace is achieved only when emotions transact... like the laughter of my daughter... sparkle of happiness in a person eyes whom you had missed for ages... sense of relaxation watching my family...

Having said so many things... the fact also remains that... words are very powerful... You can hurt a person or comfort them by using words... We can call it as word power. Words are used to express once self...

Life is a beautiful place with so many emotions to realize... sometimes by hearing words... sometimes watching expressions... sometimes speaking out words... sometimes giving out expressions... The first thing was to get the presentation done for a meeting in the first half of the day... had everything on place and when i went to the place... it was like oops... there was no need of meeting at all.... as they had freezed on things just a day before... i tried my level best to convince them for the presentation... i was working almost a month for this presentation... Well! they cut a sweet sorry for me to taste it when i left that place... it was approaching 1 in the noon and this one was also an important meeting as well... almost everything had been done and they had freezed on us... so the day was to get the documents done and contract signed... yet again it was so unfortunate as they had someother issues and they had to go up with someone else... and they too gave me a sweet sorry for me to taste... i had two more meetings that day... and those were also important... It was approaching 4 in the evening... and it was time for me to get things rite and move forward for the meeting... went to the place and waited for an hour and at last they turned up... the result was a bit different... they said due to other priorities they have put this project on hold and they might be taking it again after couple of months... now the last one... it was scheduled at 8:30 in the nite.... it was with a vip guy... this time the project was half way through and was payment time... thought should be a cool game... went there and was waiting... waiting... it was 9:30... and this guy turned up and gave peanuts... and thats the way the cookie crumbled....
Well! the four meetings had different outputs and initially i thought nothing went rite... took things together on that night and thought should get things done... did a small research and analysis stuff...
Well! in the second meeting on the day the reason the people said was due to some issues they had to go with someone else even though we were freezed... actually that was helpful for me to find the gateway for the first meeting... thought once someone is freezed... still things can change... afterall its a business world... laid a good foundation and in three days time the destiny was changed... the guy who made me to taste a sweet sorry in the first meeting three days later he did that for someone else and we were in...
now for the second meeting... when something is freezed then it has to be that way... so... yet again laid a foundation there for the gateway and within a week time destiny changed yet again... we were in again...
for the third meeting... have laid a foundation and waiting for the result... for this last meeting the guy who gave me peanuts... gave him back the same... and then he realised and released.

Actually! that day made me to realize... that no day is bad day... Its only that we need to have the mindset to learn from things... Just in case if things had gone smoothly on that day... then i wouldn't have learned things... sometimes in life whatever we learn from the tough times are of great value when we want to taste success...
well! thats it for now... thanks for dropping in to read...

When i ran out of thoughts

I had my lunch and i am feeling drowsy, had a heavy meal. I am gonna write straight without reading it and lvng it to you all. thanks for dropping to read a crap stuff... your on ur way to waste your time...
for all those who want to be creative or who think they are creative like me... then here is something which we need to understand... every individual is creative... and it is something which keeps changing from time to time by the use of technology and other related damn things... i guess we are approaching a state of creative exploitation... the purpose of creativity is to enhance something... actually what happens is... Well! i guess i gonna change my topic now... am running short of words to write...
Well! actually few days back i was moved highly by seeing a sexy girl wearing a sexy top with a sexy skirt and if i had to define her she is the acronym of sexy... when i went close to her, she turned towards me... and luckily i got some topic and few words to catch her attention... well called her out for dinner i felt so good when she nodded her head in the same sexy style... when we went for the restaurant it was all set for a blasting romance... just before it was about to start my brother was kicking my ass as it was already 9 in the morning...
I guess this should do for now... thanks for dropping to read... please be as harsh as possible as my language is worst and the presentation is poor... and please only comment on how more worst i can make it.

Our Intelligence. No BIG Mystery

We who live in the 21st century suffer from a breathtaking conceit regarding our ancient human ancestors. We believe that the poor dears were ignorant little children, occasionally making a breakthrough discovery to move the train of human knowledge along (some even going so far as to believe that aliens were responsible for it all rather than people) but by and large, seeing the ancients as a dirty, doltish bunch of superstitious ignoramuses with no indoor plumbing and an unhealthy reliance on the mystical in their everyday lives.
This ignores the facts of archeology which paint a much different picture. About 50,000 years ago, our ancestors created art on the walls of caves outside of Lascaux, France that rivals in realism and talent anything that Renaissance painters could do. The Polynesians populated the Islands of the Pacific by crossing expanses of ocean that wouldn’t be duplicated by Europeans for thousands of years. Going the Polynesians one better, it is still a mystery how people from Southeast Asia managed to make it to New Guinea 50,000 years ago.
The Egyptians moved blocks of stone weighing tens of thousands of pounds with little more than levers and rope (the block and tackle pulley system was waiting to be discovered). By sheer brute strength, they carved and maneuvered these stones, stacking them so perfectly that the tolerances achieved would make a modern engineer jealous.
The irrigation system invented by the Mayans was so sophisticated that nothing comparable would be seen until the 19th century. The Mayans also made an unbelievable leap of knowledge by coming up with the concept of zero in mathematics; as counterintuitive in its own right as the invention of quantum mechanics.
And then there were the Greeks. What we know about this astonishing culture has piqued our curiosity and excited our admiration since Medieval times. It’s what we don’t know about them that may, in the end, prove to be even more incredible than anything we could have imagined.

While scientists now know pretty much what the Antikythera mechanism did, we still don’t really have a good idea of what it was for. Possible practical uses for the device include:
- Astrology was commonly practiced in the ancient world. In order to create an astrological chart, the configuration of the heavens at a particular point of time is needed. It can be very difficult and time-consuming to work this out by hand, and a mechanism such as this would have made an astrologer’s work very much easier.
- Calculating solar and lunar eclipses.
- Setting the dates of religious festivals connected with astronomical events
- Adjusting calendars, which were based on lunar cycles as well as the solar year
This new research indicates that the Antikythera mechanism could predict eclipses to the hour of their appearance as well as the orbits of at least Venus and Mars.
The Antikythera mechanism featured wheeled gears whose sophistication and exactness wouldn’t be seen again until the watchmakers of the middle ages. What this device hints at is the probability that much human knowledge and many technological leaps were lost to history following the fall of Greek civilization. Why didn’t this kind of knowledge pass to new generations of humans so that they could build upon and improve what was already done?
Roman stupidity probably had something to do with it, an empire always more willing to plunder and destroy rather than save and study – except that which could assist them in their conquering. And the fall of that empire which plunged the Europe into the so-called “dark ages.” Of course, while barbarians were running wild in Europe, Muslim culture was in full flower, making their own scientific advances. The Muslims, in fact, admired the Greeks immensely and much of what we know of them is largely given to us by Muslim scholars who saved what they could following the great upheavals in Europe. The Antikythera mechanism reminds us that the human capacity for making great leaps forward in knowledge is not something limited to modern technological man. Throughout the history of our species, these astonishing breakthroughs have occurred in every culture and during every epoch proving that we really are quite clever when we put our minds to it.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fullspot.blogspot.com/2006/12/our-intelligence-no-big-mystery.html' title='Our Intelligence.
