Wondering this many times
Mindset. How does this exists. What are the various influences and What the
hell is this and how does it benefit. There are many books on mind control. I
have read few of those books which also speaks about positive energy, thought
process, being optimistic. Instead of dragging, let me jump to the point.
What is mind set? There
are many ways to look at this. We sometimes come across Global Mindset, in this
case there are common global thoughts which affect/effect our mind.
Like the issues on terrorism, war and peace. The global mindset is more towards
peace.
For an individual there
are a lot of things which creates or affects their mindset. Widely it could
be categorized into two, fixed and growth mindset. Let me provide a
small brief on these two. I really want to keep this post as brief as possible
and yet communicate it effectively.
Fixed mindset
People who believe
"they are the way they are" fall into this category. It doesn't mean
that they don't want to grow or something like that. In fact the people with
this mindset want to look smart, want to grow and want to be good. To reach
there though, there are few factors.
Challenges: Usually challenge
is hard and success is not assured. The people with fixed mindset to protect
their self image, they prefer ignoring it and do what they think they are good
at.
Obstacles: Challenge can be
avoided but obstacles are external force and it comes in your way. People with
this mindset mostly give up easily.
Effort: The people with
this mindset usually see it this way " what is the point if I put effort
and I am still on square one" Reasoning this out they see effort as
useless or even if they take that one step they give up quickly for the same
reason.
Criticism: The fixed mindset
leads to take criticism as an insult or personal assault even if the criticism
is given for their capability.
Success of others: These people
benchmark the success of others against which they feel bad. Mostly when others
succeed the people of fixed mindset convince themselves and people around them
that the reason for the other persons success is due to luck or some
objectionable actions. Sometimes they would even try to tarnish the success of
others by bringing up some unrelated things.
As a result of these, they
usually don't reach their full potential and their belief feeds on themselves.
They don't improve or change with time.
Growth mindset
The people with this
mindset usually believe there is always scope
of improvement and they improve their intelligence. The factors which
define them are briefed in short.
Challenges: These people
embrace the challenge and believe they would come out strong.
Obstacles: Obstacles are
obstacles and people with this mindset usually face the obstacle strongly and
come out of it rather than just giving up.
Effort: People with this
mindset don't look at the result but they put their
effort and see that as
their path to mastery.
Criticism: The growth
mindset people don't take every criticism but they also don't ignore neither
take it personally. The look into the criticism and evaluate themselves based
on the received criticism. They also consider negative feedback and criticism
as source of information.
Success of others: People
with this mindset take other peoples success as source of inspiration and
information.
As a result of these, they
usually improvise themselves and create a positive feedback loop.
By this time you must have
identified what is your mindset and also to a extent mindset of few people as
well. If you think you fall under Fixed mindset, not to worry you can
always make the change by being the change.
If you have kids at your
home then you can encourage the child so that they have a growth mindset.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, this is true. Mind set can be simplified as a by product of 'way of life' influenced by either of the following:
> Teacher
> Peer group
> Books
Cheers
At the outset wishing u a very Happy and Prosperous New Year, 2013. What a way to start a new year, welcome back. I really liked the study that u have made and explained it in a most simple way. It made me realize which catergory i belong to ... and also helped me to see that my kids grow up with growth mindset. In a nutshell the fixed mindset people are pessimistic and ones with a growth mindset are optimistic.
keep blogging ... feels good to read and also tend to learn something or other :)
Hi Jane,
Thanks for your comment. I haven't thought deeply in those aspect. Mind set happens by experiences, situations and also by various influences. Lemme do some research on that and keep you posted.
@Uma
Thanks for your comment and wishes. I heartily reciprocate the same.
Just one clarification from the comment, i think it might not be appropriate to term fixed mindset people as pessimistic and the other optimistic. I haven't thought thro and researched on those angles. Lemme ride my thought in those directions. watch out for this space for the update :)
